However, his reception was far from warm, and his unhappiness at home led him to run away again and eventually to enlist as a soldier under the command of the Governor of Salces in the Pyrenees. This marked the beginning of a rapid rise in the author's fortunes. His courage and intelligence were quickly recognized, and he was soon promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. In this capacity, he led a daring raid on the Spanish garrison at Salles, capturing the Governor and his mistress. This exploit brought him to the attention of Cardinal Richelieu, who summoned him to Paris and took him into his service as a Page. The author's account of his life as a Page to Cardinal Richelieu provides a unique glimpse into the inner workings of the French court and the machinations of one of the most powerful men in Europe.
