Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book evaluates the performance of four pine species (Scotch, European black, red, and jack) across 20 years in eastern Nebraska, analyzing different geographic provenances. The author identifies specific geographic seed sources that produce trees well-suited to the Great Plains environment in terms of survival, growth, resistance to disease, and crown and stem characteristics. Correlations between juvenile and mature tree characteristics indicate that superior height growth can be identified by age 10, enabling early selection of desirable provenances. The research findings contribute to the understanding of adaptive differentiation in these pine species and provide valuable guidance for selecting and propagating trees for Great Plains plantings, enhancing landscape design, windbreak effectiveness, and habitat improvement.
