This book updates Wieland's work on Protostega gigas by combining free elements of the original skeleton with recently recovered fossils to provide new insights into the phylogenetic position of this marine turtle within the Chelonioidea. The book reviews the slow accretion of our knowledge of Protosteginae since the discovery of remains in the mid-19th century, which was furthered by the acquisition of two nearly complete specimens in the early 20th century. The author explores the organization of the fore and hind limbs, the most important parts yet undescribed, providing precise measurements to reinforce the discussion. These findings are set against the historical context of other discoveries of marine turtles, including Toxochelys and Archelon. The book presents new evidence regarding the tarsal, carpal, and cranial organization of Protostega, with a particular focus on the development of its limbs as a means of establishing relationships to other marine turtles and to land-based turtles. A detailed comparison of the relative sizes of the humerus and ulna, and of the radius and ulna, as well as the lengths of the fingers and metacarpals of various Testudinates, is included. Ultimately, this book clarifies the place of Protostega within the Chelonioidea, updates knowledge of the phylogenetic relationships of marine turtles, and suggests their evolution from a more generalized limb type.
