The region had come under Russian control in the mid-19th century, and the book provides a record of the mammals observed there over a two-year period by the author. The author places his findings in the broader context of the known geographical ranges of each species, and discusses the taxonomic status of some of the species based on his observations and comparison with type specimens. This book is a valuable historical record of the biodiversity of a region that had previously been little explored by European naturalists, and provides insights into the distribution of mammals in the far east of Asia.
