The author's work on infection, in particular, would lay the groundwork for centuries of scientific thought on the subject. Among Fracastoro's many contributions to science were his early advocacy of the heliocentric theory, a suggestion that the Earth was subject to secular changes of elevation, and perhaps most importantly, the development of the theory of infection that would bear his name, which holds that infectious diseases are caused by the transmission of tiny particles, or "seeds".
