Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles the extraordinary life and career of John Barwick, a loyalist who opposed the English Rebellion and went on to serve as Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral. Born in 1612, Barwick was a man of great faith and learning, characteristics which shaped his life and work. As a young man, he was chosen as the representative of his college to address concerns with the election of a new master to King Charles I, a choice that launched his career in politics and espionage. Despite his later ordination as a priest, Barwick engaged in several dangerous missions on behalf of the King, becoming a key figure in the Royalist cause. After the Restoration, he returned to more conventional ecclesiastical life, but continued to perform secretarial duties for Charles II. Barwick's personal papers provide a valuable insight into the political and religious turmoil of the era, and this account of his life brings to life a significant but underexamined figure at its heart.
