August 22, 1485, Richard III fell fighting at Bosworth. His crown was placed on the head of the victorious Henry Tudor, and the triumphant army hailed their leader as King Henry VII. There was little in Henry sposition to suggest that he was to inaugurate an era of national vigour and progress. The success of his rebellion had been due rather to the defects of Richard and the treachery of Richard sfollowers than to any merit or skill of his own. Though not so absurd to contemporaries as it seems to us, bis title to the throne was of the weakest; and there were still representatives of the House of York who might assert their claims without the handicap of unpopularity that had ruined Richard. Even less hopeful seemed the prospects of the nation. It had been passing through one of the darkest periods of our history. The long struggle between the Houses of York and Lancaster, reproduced everywhere in the private feuds of the nobility, had crippled the administrative system. The suffering which resulted from the insecurity of life and property was intensified by economic changes. Corn-land was on all sides being turned into pasture, and agricultural labourers were consequently thrown out of employment and often evicted from their holdings.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book charts the historical collision course between the monarchy and the English people during the dramatic Tudor era. The author consistently positions each monarch's reign within its broader context, with rich detail and keen insight into their motivations and deeds. The book reveals the stark contrast between the shrewd and cunning Henry VII and his impulsive and passionate son, Henry VIII. It encapsulates the religious turbulence of the era and the monarchs' complex relationship with the papacy. The author explores the inherent dangers of England's internal strife during the reigns of the boy-king Edward VI, the ambitious and ruthless Northumberland, and the tragic Mary, whose devout Catholicism led her to sanction the horrific persecution of Protestants. In contrast, Elizabeth's shrewd pragmatism and deft touch bring stability and a new-found sense of nationhood. This book offers a fresh perspective on the often-told story of the Tudor era, exploring the fundamental themes of power, politics, and religion that shaped a period of profound transformation for England. It is a compelling and thought-provoking read for anyone interested in a deeper understanding of English history and its legacy.
