Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This diary is a record of 25 years in the life and career of a military officer who served for 20 of those years as Lieutenant Deputy of the Tower of London. As such, this provides a unique firsthand account of the daily routines and events at the Tower from 1722-1747 as well as an insight into the Jacobite prisoners held there. The author, whose sympathies were wholeheartedly with the reigning Hanoverian monarchs and government, provides insights into the plots, attempted escapes, and eventual trials of many Jacobite prisoners including Bishop Atterbury and Lords Kilmarnock, Cromarty, and Balmerino. The author's evident bias against the Jacobite prisoners, of whom he was jailer, does not extend to his account of the Gordon Riots of 1780 which he also witnessed and which he describes at length, with a clear eye for detail, and a sympathy for those caught up in the violence of the mob.
