Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides new historical material on a key moment in the reign of Charles I. It reproduces a cache of previously unknown documents that shed fresh light on the period leading up to the Scottish invasion of England in 1640. As such, it complements a volume published by the Camden Society in 1868, offering new insights into the peace treaty arranged at Dunse Law in 1639. At the time, war was widely anticipated between Charles I and the Scottish Covenanters, but the Scotsâ invasion caught the English government off-guard. This book explores why England was unprepared for the invasion and what the state of mind of the English people was with reference to the passing public events. It also discusses the measures the English government took to raise money for the war effort. These measures included forced loans, debasement of the coinage, and a special subscription from English Roman Catholics. The notes are full of incident, showing, for example, widespread resistance to the forced loans and the frequent mutinies and desertions amongst the English troops. The editors provide an introduction placing the documents in their historical and political context, plus a thorough index which renders this a valuable resource for scholars and general readers alike.
