Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of insects and their unexpected capacity to damage metal. It explores a global phenomenon, documenting cases of insect damage to a wide range of metal products, from lead bullets and cartridges to the sheathing of aerial telephone cables. The author meticulously details the history of this surprising interaction between nature and technology, tracing the problem back to the early 1900s. The book focuses in particular on a species of beetle known as the "lead-cable borer" which, in its efforts to create burrows for eggs and larvae, often tunnels through the lead sheathing of cables, causing significant damage and costly repairs. The author investigates the beetle's life cycle, feeding habits, and preferred nesting materials, uncovering its surprising fondness for oak wood and its ability to even kill living trees in some instances. The book concludes with a detailed examination of various experiments aimed at controlling the lead-cable borer, providing a valuable resource for those concerned with protecting metal infrastructure from the persistent onslaught of these determined insects. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. N de rf. du vendeur 9781334747922_0
