A p99 CXY L87 PREFATOKY NOTE. The following chapters, with the exception of the sixth, comprise a course of lectures which were prepared for the students of Andover Theological Seminary, and delivered at Andover in November, 1886. The third chapter had also previously been used as a lecture, in Cincinnati, before the students of Lane Theological Seminary. The greater part of the first, second, fourth, and fifth chapters subsequently appeared in the Andover Review, with whose kind permission they are reprinted here. The whole matter, with considerable additions and some changes, is now respectfully offered to the public in the hope that it may contribute to the general information and deepen the general interest in the great subject with which it deals, and may thus help to prepare the way for the adoption of more earnest and systematic efforts looking toward the advancement of the Kedeemer skingdom among the neglected masses of the great towns.
