At the time of publication, England was at war with revolutionary France. Those who openly praised the French Revolution or criticized the monarchy were subject to arrest and imprisonment. Despite the threat of imprisonment, Pigott spoke out against the war, distributed radical literature and hosted political meetings. He was arrested, charged with sedition, and imprisoned for three weeks. This book is the defense he prepared, but never got to deliver, at his trial. Pigott's trial is placed in the context of a longer history of persecution of those who dissent from the position of the Crown in England. The book shows that Pigott was part of a tradition of men and women who were willing to risk their very lives to protect the freedom of Englishmen to say what they think. Pigottâs courage, and the courage of those who came before him, ensured that right remains a cornerstone of English society to this day.
