Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the life and work of Reverend George H. Atkinson, a prominent Congregational minister who played a pivotal role in the religious and educational development of the Pacific Northwest during the mid-19th century. Born in Massachusetts in 1819, Atkinson's early life was marked by a deep commitment to Christian service. He was ordained in 1846 and served as a missionary among the Illinois before being sent to Oregon Territory in 1847. There, he became the pastor of the First Congregational Church in Oregon City and later in Portland, where he remained for 25 years. During his tenure, Atkinson also served as superintendent of home missions for Oregon and Washington, helping to establish numerous churches and schools throughout the region. He was a strong advocate for education, and his efforts helped to establish the Tualatin Academy and Pacific University. Atkinson's tireless work and dedication left a lasting legacy on the religious and educational landscape of the Pacific Northwest.
