Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the conclusions of a thorough investigation into the working conditions of laborers and contractors tasked with the construction of the San Francisco Seawall in the 1880s. The author utilizes statements from laborers, foremen, property owners, the San Francisco Harbor Commissioners, and even California Governor George Stoneman to piece together a thorough picture of the working conditions of the time. The author analyzes whether or not the laborers were subject to the state's eight-hour workday law, and includes within the book the full text of the law itself. The author also discusses the 'truck system' prevalent at the time, a system in which laborers were paid with goods or commodities rather than cash, as well as the interference into the electoral franchise of the laborers. The book concludes with a reflection on the insights that this investigation provides into the historical treatment of laborers, and a condemnation of the 'truck system' as an 'outrageous and infamous' practice.
