At the time of writing, the institution was facing significant financial constraints that have impacted its ability to provide adequate educational experiences for students. The author points to other universities, such as Yale, Harvard, and McGill, that have grown and prospered with the support of private funds. The University Of Toronto, however, has been unsuccessful in this regard because citizens see no reason to donate to an institution that they believe is already funded by the government. The author suggests that the university be granted more leeway to raise its own funds, or that the government step up its financial support of the university so that it can grow and keep up with the times.
