Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book, originally printed towards the end of the 19th century, collects speeches on politics and oratory given by University of Michigan students which won oratorical competitions within the university, as well as within the Northern Oratorical League. The original speeches cover a wide range of topics: from arguments for international peace and arbitration, to the role of the United States in international affairs, to the history of oratory, to the power of the press. The orations here reflect the political realities of the time, particularly the wave of imperialism following the Spanish -American war. The orations also highlight the promise and peril of new technology, with one speech arguing the importance of a merchant marine and international banking and clearing houses, while another decries materialistic excess. While the specific historical context is different today, and many of the technological marvels of the time are no longer novelties, the search for common ground and a hope for a world free of the scourge of war continue to resonate powerfully. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. N° de réf. du vendeur 9781334960338_0
