Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is the third of nineteen chapters that explore the evolution of Western scientific understanding of the universe, from its origins in ancient Greece right through the medieval era. The author, a former Cornell University president, begins this chapter by considering the ancient Greek idea of creation, in which the universe is seen as the product of a divine force speaking matter into existence. He then shows how, in the Middle Ages, this idea was adopted by the early Christian Church, which elaborated it through a series of thinkers over thousands of years. But the author also discusses a lesser current of thought, inspired by Aristotle, that proposed that some of the lesser animals, especially insects, were produced by a sort of later evolution, being evoked after the original creation from various sources, but chiefly from matter in a state of decay. The author shows how St. Basil the Great and, most famously, St. Augustine adopted this idea, widening it to include the view that certain substances are endowed by God with the power of producing certain classes of plants and animals. By locating the roots of evolutionary thought in venerated sources, this book revises our understanding of the history of scientific ideas and their place in Western thought.
