My purpose in this work is to show the influence of the press upon the political life of Japan. For such success as I have attained in overcoming the great difficulties caused by the complexity of the problem and the lack of access (owing to my residence in A merica) to the original Japanese sources, I am chiefly indebted to my younger brotherS ukejuro Kawabe, who, for four years, has constantly labored in Japan to supply me with the necessary information and materials.
