At the period when Haddon Hall was the proud seat of the Vernons, the oldE nghsh hospitality of our barons and feudal chiefs rendered supei-fluous that less gracious and grateful dispensation which had previously borne the name of Charity a name that the wiser benevolence of the times we speak of had, in England at least, banished from the vocabulaiy used to interpret between man and man.
