This volume was prepared as the result of a movement begun on Maryland Day, March 25, 1909. The State Board of Education had assigned as a special topic for the day, Maryland si Contribution to American Literature. To consider this subject, a meeting was held at the Johns Hopkins University, at which a committee was appointed to formulate plans for promoting a more general knowledge and appreciation of Maryland history and literature. It was here that the author of this volume conceived the idea of preparing a critical and descriptive account of the representative literary workers of the State of Maryland from its settlement to the present time. Later, this special committee became merged, for similar efifort, in the Randall Literary-M emorial A ssociation, which aims to cherish the memory of James Ryder Randall, the author of the State anthem and, therefore, the most distinctive Maryland writer; and to associate -with his name a disinterested endeavor to learn and propagate the best that is known and thought in Maryland.
