Présentation de l'éditeur

Preface. IT is generally conceded that it is advisable to give students of chemistry as broad an experience as possible in the use of analytical methods, in order to have them acquire skill in manipulation and to acquaint them with the important bearing of chemical analysis. This experience can, in a great measure, be obtained by supplementing the usual preparatory courses in gravimetric and volumetric analysis with instruction in the execution of methods which are being constantly applied in the analysis of industrial products. The authors of this book have had much experience in teaching chemical-technical analysis, and in the following pages have presented many methods of this description in a series of examples, selected from a variety of products. They have been very fortunate in their choice, and have undoubtedly done much to assist the earnest student. The conviction that a course of this character would be welcomed by English-speaking students, and helpful not only to them but also to many who are already engaged in industrial pursuits, has led the translator to publish the little volume in its present form. He has not edited the text, but has taken the liberty to add an appendix, in which are incorporated additional examples which actual laboratory testing has shown to be highly instructive, as well as exceedingly valuable, in the direction of imparting skill in manipulation. In this connection, too, the translator would take occasion to acknowledge his great indebtedness to Mr. Walter T. Taggart, B. S., for valuable assistance rendered in the reading of the proof and the preparation of the index. H. F.
