World War was referred to everywhere as the essential step if society was to get on. The problems that were apparent in the previous decade were emphasized by war conditions and publicists urged the need of reforms and changes to meet the conditions produced by the world conflict. The close of the war, however, left all the nations, including our own, discouraged or lethargic, and slow to undertake the steps necessary to a larger social program. A book on reconstruction at this time, despite the number already published, seems desirable. Most of the books published on the subject have been rather extended and technical for the average reader. Miss Mac Leans book is, in a measure, a review of the problems of reconstruction stated in an attractive way. The book ought to be of real value in introducing to the reader the problems of reconstruction, and as such, it is given a place in the National Social Science Series with the feeling on the part of the editor that the public will find it of great assistance in opening the way for the study of the problems of reconstruction. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form.
