Pendennis, Thackeray ssecond long story, was begun almost immediately upon the conclusion of Vanity Fair; the latter was completed by the publication of a double number in July 1848, and in the same month the author went abroad, and early letters thence announced that he had set to work upon the new story. To his friend Mrs. Brookfield he wrote from Spa on August 11: The waiter enters my door at teno clock this morning, just as I had finished writing page seven of Pendennis ;and, apparently on the same day, writing to his mother, he referred to his work on the initial instalment I opened my fire yesterday with the first chapter of Pendennis and have had another good spell this morning before breakfast, such a good one as authorised two mutton chops along with my coffee. The first part of the new novel was announced for publication at the beginning of November, and on October 4T hackeray wrote from his Kensington home: I have just opened my desk ;there are all the papers I had at Spa Pendennis unread since, and your lettei.
