Présentation de l'éditeur

Nearly a hundred years have elapsed since Mrs Barbauld sedition of Samuel Richardson sC orrespondence appeared. This was preceded by a biographical sketch which still forms the chief source of information concerning a writer whose importance in the development of English fiction would seem to render necessary a cheaper and more accessible biography. The present book is an attempt to gather into a moderate compass the essential facts of his life. It is based on Mrs Barbauld sM emoir, which, however, has been largely supplemented by information obtained from Richardson sunpublished correspondence in the Forster Library at theS outh Kensington Museum, from the registers of Charterhouse Chapel andS tB ride s, Fleet Street, and from other contemporary sources. The critical chapters are intended chiefly as a guide to those readers who are quite unacquainted with Richardson snovels, and it is hoped that the references to the works of the principal English, French, and German writers on the subject may be found useful by those wishing to pursue the study further.
