Présentation de l'éditeur

Preface THE purpose of this book is to give information to those interested in this Library. Within a few pages, it is quite impossible to furnish even a short list of books pertaining to some of the chapters. The writer had contemplated issuing a Check List of all the titles in the Library, rather than the synopsis of important books here presented. The proposed list would have placed the book in the range of bibliography, but this plan was abandoned because of the fact that such a list, while giving desirable bibliographical information, would not fulfil other purposes. Consequently, the book may not interest bibliographers; neither will the advanced student of history find in these pages new information. But it is hoped that this work, even if only fairly well done, will interest those who jam would learn of the sources whence came much of what we know about our own country. The mention of the title of a book means little unless the reader is sufficiently informed to weigh its value and place it in proper relation to others of its kind. In this weighing of values and classification much study is required, and the separation of the important and truthful from the less important compilations is the combined task of the historian and bibliographer.
