An editor once asked me to write a poem. The suggestion so alarmed me, I nearly swooned. The publisher of The Doctor has asked me to do something quite as difficult he has asked me to write a foreword to the new series of sketches. I have bitten the end of my pen, I have gazed at the virgin fairness of the paper in front of me, I have frowned into what artists call the middle distance, but nothing happened !T hen one suggested that I should at least chronicle my gratitude for the reception The Doctor has got, and I can speak now. I do appreciate that it amazes me, it makes me glad and proud and humble. When The Doctor was first launched on the troubled waters of literature, I prayed that my mere snow flake on the river might make an easy and quick port; that some one might read of this good man and feel helped, but that it should have got the world-wide welcome it has got certainly never entered the heads of any of us who were connected with the launching of this small barque. The new series is just a handful of stories I have re-told. No one is more conscious of their scrappiness than myself, but perhaps my readers will be charitable, as the original would have been, and will see that there are certain dear, intimate and lovely things I could not set down.
