Canning than as an appreciation of his policy, and particularly of his foreign policy. They contain a transcription and expansion of the notes of a lecture delivered at Cambridge, and I have not always been careful to eliminate, though I have not striven to preserve, the original lecture form. The scope of this little book forbids regular references, but I have mentioned in the text or in notes most of the authorities to whom I am specially indebted. For the earlier part of Canning scareer the Malmesbury Papers, the Grenville Memoirs, and certain Reports of the Historical MSS. Commission are the most valuable of the original authorities; for the later the Wellington Despatches contain a mine of wealth.
