Présentation de l'éditeur

A ftbe the death of Dr. Hurst in the spring of this year, I was asked to undertake the revision of the present edition of this book. My connection with Professor Milnes Marshall and Dr. Hurst enabled me the more readily to comply with this request. No new matter involving a change in the plan of the work has been added. I have, however, thought it well to recast the chapters on technique, and to adopt many of the alterations and additions which have been suggested by a constant use of the last (1895) edition. My friend and colleague, Mr. J. H. A sh worth, has aided me very signally throughout, and I must also express my indebtedness toP rofessor Hickson, and toM r. F. J. Cole, Demonstrator in the Zoological Department of University College, Liverpool, for his assistance in correcting the account of the nerves and lateral sense-organs of theD og-fish. The digits of the birds wing a subject on which Dr. Hurst held the heterodox view of their homology with the third, fourth, and fifth digits of the reptilian hand I have named topographically, a via media which has the recommendation of not implying a conclusion based on evidence which cannot be presented in this work. P. W. GAMBLE. Owens College :D ecember 1898.
