Spanish A rt. Unaided by the labours of Richard Ford and Sir W. Stirling-M axwell the attempt at compiling even these slender pages would have proved a task scarcely practicable. That task has been also greatly lightened by recourse to the valuable information that has rewarded the careful and laborious researches of Don Pedro de Madrazo of Madrid. AC atalogue of the painters works, based upon M. Burger slist (which seems for the most part to have been taken from Sir W. Stirling-M axwell s) and augmented from the official catalogues of the public galleries of Europe, will be found at the end of the book. It is not to be regarded as exhaustive, although no masterpiece or important work of Velazquez of which the compiler has been able to ascertain the present locality has been omitted.
