Présentation de l'éditeur

This book is intended to bring before the beginner examples of the various forms of steam apparatus used in modern steam-power plants, to explain simply and briefly the construction, use, and reasons for using these various parts or machines, and to give him a working vocabulary in this branch of engineering. The book is prepared, primarily, for firstyear students in engineering schools, but it is hoped that it may be of use to the general reader and to the great number of young men in the. manual-training schools and institutes throughout the country. The work contains little theoretic matter, as, in most cases, these portions are taken in the latter part of a students course, and after he has become familiar with many machines. In the early part of his course, however, he should be taught the uses of the various machines he finds about him. In preparing the work, English and American works on the steam-engine and the technical papers have been freely consulted, though, in most cases, the drawings have been made from the actual machines, or from blue prints supplied by the builder. The authors are indebted to the manufacturers and engineers who have kindly furnished drawings and data and wish to express their appreciation and thanks. The A uthors. January 6, 1903.
