Présentation de l'éditeur

It is not because kindergartens amuse the children, keep them out of mischief, teach them to use their hands, and, to some extent, their brains, that they are chiefly valuable. These things have a use, of course; but the real service of the kindergartens is that they are a concession from the old habit of regarding the childs mind as a thing to be built up according to the laws of pedagogy, that they are the expression of the scientific method. In this method the attitude of teacher and of pupil toward each other entirely changes; one is no longer the Procrustes to whose measurement all over whom he rules must submit, and the other the victim of a tyranny destructive of mental growth or scientific progress.
