This work was actually commenced in the latter end of the year 1867, when I had occasion to professionally test some indicator diagrams. The means I adopted were td consider, first, the proportions of the details that regulated the admission, expansion, and exhaustion of the steam, and secondly, their geometrical delineation. Having proceeded thus far, I then concluded that as the length of the motion for the indicator barrel was virtually that of the stroke of the piston, the scale of the geometrical test that I employed must be subject to that circumstance. I accordingly made a drawing of the cylinder ports, slidevalve, link motion, eccentrics and rods, a portion oi the piston, length of the connecting rod.
