Library 1PREFACE. The following Problems, Notes andS ketches have been prepared for use in the instruction of the naval cadets of the second class. The arrangement of the subjects treated follows that of the text-book on Marine Engines, in order that the books may be used conjointly. The book is an outcome of a quantity of type-written matter which was prepared originally by Passed Assistant Engineers W. F. Worthington and John L.G ow, U. S. N., while attached to this school. With this has been incorporated much new matter, especial care having been taken to explain the uses and action of boiler and engine attachments and patented devices met with on board ship, in order that the cadet may obtain a thorough knowledge of the details of marine machinery, as well as a general understanding of the subject. The Arrangement of Machinery, and many of the devices mentioned, are those of the U. S. S. Bancroft, one of theN aval Academy practice ships, although not confined exclusively to that vessel.
