Essays contained in this volume have already appeared in some of the English Reviews. Only three will be absolutely new to our readers, namely, the first, the fourth, and the last ;and these may fittingly be associated with the others, since they touch upon subjects intimately connected with those now under discussion by the Anglican and Ritualistic sections of the religious public. Although we write for all educated persons who interest themselves in great religious questions of the day, yet we address ourselves more especially to two classes of readers the members of the High Church and of the Ritualistic parties, who, from some points of view, approach more closely to the Catholic Church than any other divisions of the Anglican body. We have carefully revised those Essays which have been previously published ;and, without making any essential alteration, we have modified some expressions, so as to bring our phraseology into more exact accord ance with our views.
