Présentation de l'éditeur

Middle A ges, the promised revision and expansion of the latter part of myM edieval and Modern History, A mong the new features of the work are the annotated reference lists of primary and secondary authorities appended to the different chapters. It is my hope that these may prove, to those using the book as a school text, suggestive and helpful in some degree commensurate with the time and labor which their preparation has involved. For several of the maps illustrating the text I am indebted to the courtesy of the editor. Dr. Reginald Lane Poole, and the publishers of the Historical Atlas of Modem Europe, Maps Nos. I, 2, 3, lo, and 13, as named in the list on page ix, are based on maps from this admirable work. It should be stated, however, that in adapting these maps to our text much detail, in the case of several of them, has been omitted, and that the chart entitled The Expansion of Europe is practically a new map drawn expressly for the present work. The map named The Partition of Africa is based, in the main, on charts inK eltie sexcellent work .
