In the following pages the references are, for the most part, to some of the better known sources only. For further investigation of the various phases of American History, however, there are several bibliographical aids with which the student should have at least a bowing acquaintance. Gianning. Hart and Turner, Guide to flicS tudy andR eading of A nnrican History (1912), is by far the most usable for the average person. In addition to enumerating the principal works of a standard nature, tlie dififerent aspects of American History are treated topically each subject being followed by a list of works, source and secondary, which are especially valuable. A detailed index adds further convenience to the compilation. J. N. Larned, Literature of .I nieriean History: a IV iblioiirapliieal Cuide (1902), not only enumerates the principal works on American History, but contains a brief critical note evaluating eacli item. Supplements to this work extend through 1904. An annual publication, IV ritings on .I nieriean History, the first volume of which appeared in 1902, contains a list of practically all books and articles dealing with all phases of American history appearing during the year, the date of which is borne by the volume. The titles are classified by periods and by topics, but there is no critical note, althougli ii! some cases reference is made to reviews appearing in various periodicals. One class of material, the publications of historical societies, has been made available by A. P. C. Grififin in Bibliography of .-inieriean Historical Societies (A merican Historical A ssociation, Annual Report. 1905, Vol. II).
