By special appointment of Prof. W. H. Smith, A. M., President of the New Market Polytechnic I nstitute, and a committee of the alumni, the author delivered, during commencement week, on Friday night, May 25, 1886, before the Alumni Association of the aforesaid I nstitution, the Memoriai. Address on the Life and Character OF Joseph Saiyards, herewith for the first time presented in printed form to the public. In an interview, several weeks preceding the death of Prof. Saiyards, the author secured many of the facts embodied in the address, and now submits them in their present form as the fullest and completest biography of the deceased yet published. The closing pages contain short extracts from I dothea, a poem written by Prof. Salyards, and are thus presented to exhibit his ability as a master of epic, satiric, and lyric composition. ELON O.
