With even more presence of mind than A li, (a real surprise to me, for over a period of years A li had displayed more resourcefulness in emergencies than any native I had ever employed anywhere in A sia) the newcomer grabbed a two-byfour scantling and shoved it into the open mouth of the would-be killer, the animal biting down on it. The surest way of saving my features was to put something besides my wornout knee between me and those vicious teeth, and the scantling did the trick. The animal, one piece of lumber between his teeth and another being brought down on his head, backed away a few paces. As he did, A li reached through the fence and grabbed my arm, pulling me further away from the maddened creature. At this point the other boy jumped over the fence, and, while A li beat the animal off with his board, lifted me to my feet. Almost falling against it in my weakened condition, I grabbed the top of the fence, putting one foot in an open space between the boards about a foot from the ground. Then this boy who served as All sassistant (although in this stirring operation he was really the leader and A li the assistant) gave me a great boost, which, combined with my own efforts, sent me toppling over the fence onto the ground on the other side where I landed in a limp heap.
