Khiva was because so many people said it was impossible. That there was a certain amount of fascination in the idea I admit, for I have always been a keen admirer of the stalwart guardsman whose horseback ride across the desert of Kizilkum will be remembered long after his brave exploits in Egypt have been forgotten. My object was to emulate Captain Burnaby sride to Khiva, but as a sportsman only.
