Hrotsvit, one of medieval Europe's earliest dramatists, wrote these plays during the Ottonian Renaissance, a period of cultural and intellectual renewal in the Holy Roman Empire. Her plays are unique in that they are the first known plays written by a woman in the Middle Ages and the first to feature female characters as the central protagonists.
