Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book analyzes a large survey from the 1950s that compares fertility rates of rural farm-operator households across the United States. The author first considers the large variation in the number of children born to farm families, taking into account the parentâs age and marital status, as well as the region in which they lived and their socioeconomic class. He then discusses the variation by degree of dependence on agriculture, total family income, type of farm, and tenure of farm. The author concludes by noting that regional differences in fertility can be largely attributed to the proportion of nonwhite farm operators in the southern United States, concluding that the high birth rate among southern farm families was primarily due to the high fertility of nonwhite farm families, who at that time made up a quarter of all souther farm families. Despite the data being somewhat dated, this study provides a unique look at the fertility patterns of rural farm families during a time of significant societal change.
