The author studies the influence of plant size, volume, and sidelines on costs in order to equip those who will make future investments in country elevator facilities and equipment with the up-to-date information needed to make practical use of the results. Prior to the 1950s, most country elevators were built for a much longer harvest period, and for horse and wagon or small truck farm-to-market transportation. With combine harvesters, better farm-to-market roads, larger trucks and tractors, and electric power, farmers can now move an entire crop directly from the field to the elevator in a matter of 10 days or 2 weeks. Thus, the construction of new slip form concrete plants with capacities of up to several hundred thousand bushels has been an inevitable market response. These and other advancements have created a need for more detailed study of modern grain elevator operating costs, which this book provides by examining annual country elevator costs available from audit statements and records of operations maintained by these companies, as well as using personal observations made at plants and interviews conducted with elevator operators and managers.
