The author notes prairie dogs destroy forage at a rate of 80% in wheat grass areas and 83% in blue grama regions. The author emphasizes the adverse effect that prairie dogs have on range grasses, especially during droughts, and observes that the damage they cause is often much greater than is realized by ranchers. While the book details the difficulties involved in determining the actual damage done by rodents on the open range, the author nonetheless presents the results of the experiments as a basis for estimating the losses ranchers suffer both in cultivated crops and on the open range. The author concludes by observing that prairie dogs do not possess any beneficial food habits and that their complete eradication on all grazing ranges is justified by their negative impact on forage crops and the consequent loss of grazing capacity.
