Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the extensive water quality monitoring program of the Southeast Utah Group of the National Park Service, which has been monitoring water quality in springs and rivers since 1983. The program's primary goal has been to establish a baseline database for various springs and streams located in the three parks of Canyonlands, Arches, and Natural Bridges, addressing contemporary water quality issues and establishing parameters, monitoring frequencies, and protocols for future data collection. The book presents a comprehensive assessment of existing water quality data, along with an evaluation of the program's technical aspects, providing recommendations for data management protocols, sampling and laboratory analysis protocols, and monitoring site selection. These recommendations stem from a review of the program in 1992, which prompted the author to revise the monitoring plan and write this book to document the program's history and current status. The author notes that, overall, most water quality parameters analyzed appear to be within normal levels for small springs in the Colorado Plateau; however, wide ranges of minimum and maximum values have been measured, possibly due to sampling errors or ambient conditions. Several parameters, such as pH, alkalinity, sulfate, nitrate, and ammonia, had values that were suspect, and significant differences were noted between the results obtained by park staff and the state laboratory, indicating a need for improved quality control factors such as equipment calibration, sample handling, and preservation techniques. This book's significance lies in its provision of a valuable historical account of the monitoring program, coupled with recommendations to enhance the program's effectiveness in assessing and safeguarding the water resources of the region for generations to come.
