Synopsis

"Reliability is an old concept and a new discipline of engineering and technology. The main problems related to reliability evaluation of a component or system are lack of data, limitation of computational resources, lack of realistic reliability techniques, aversion to the use of probabilistic techniques, and a misunderstanding of the significance and meaning of probabilistic criteria and risk indices. These reasons are not valid today since most utilities have valid and applicable data, reliability evaluation techniques are very developed, and most engineers have a working understanding of probabilistic techniques. The reliability theory developed mainly applied to these specific fields. Since the first failure is most important in such an application, the theory idea of reliability was mainly developed for non-repairable systems. The development of reliability analysis methods for the repairable system was slow. Concurrently with the development of reliability aspects, an enormous amount of component failure data was collected, analyzed, and published in electronics engineering. Nowadays, reliability studies are performed in almost all engineering branches. Such studies evolve applications for both repairable and non-repairable systems in all areas."--
