Synopsis

This second volume presents the first English translation of memoirs widely regarded as among the finest in the extensive Napoleonic literature. Ilya Timofeyevich Radozhitskii, who served with distinction throughout the wars against Napoleon, composed these recollections shortly after the conflict, drawing on notes kept during his campaigns. Born in 1788 and educated at the Imperial Orphanage, he entered an artillery unit in 1806 and rose steadily through the ranks. The 1812 invasion of Russia proved decisive for his career: as an artillery lieutenant he participated in nearly every major engagement of that campaign. In 1813–1814 he fought in the War of German Liberation and the invasion of France, serving with distinction at Bischofswerde, Bautzen, Katzbach, and Leipzig, and ending the war in Paris as a staff captain. Although assigned to the Russian Expeditionary Corps in 1815, he reached France too late to confront Napoleon after his return. Radozhitskii’s memoirs offer valuable insight into the daily life and experiences of Russian officers during the Napoleonic Wars. This volume follows his advance across Germany as the Russian army, buoyed by its 1812 victory, moved to liberate the German states. His narrative provides vivid descriptions of battle, compelling accounts of soldiers’ and officers’ wartime experiences, and poignant depictions of the French retreat.

À propos des auteurs

Alexander Mikaberidze is an assistant professor of history at Mississippi State University. He holds a law degree from the Republic of Georgia and a Ph.D. in history from Florida State University, where he worked at the Institute on Napoleon and the French Revolution. He serves as president of the Napoleonic Society of Georgia.

Peter G.A. Phillips is a retired soldier and civil servant who worked for 27 years in the British Army Intelligence Corps (in Germany, the Falkland Islands, Northern Ireland, Hong Kong, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan), including working as a Russian, German, and Serbo-Croat linguist, before working for five years as part of a Civil Service team training UK military personnel to serve in diplomatic missions world-wide. He has been translating Russian military histories of the Coalition Wars since December 2019, initially as a hobby, having been encouraged by renowned Napoleonic historian Dr Alexander Mikaberidze following a chance encounter on social media. He now lives in the Philippines with his Filipina wife of 33 years. They have two adult daughters.
