Often called the American Agatha Christie, Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876-1958) was a prolific author who wrote hundreds of books, short stories, poems, travelogues, plays, and special articles. Many of her works were best-sellers, but critics were most appreciative of her murder mysteries. Several of her books and plays were adapted for movies. Although she never used the phrase herself, she is considered the source of “The butler did it.”

The Man in Lower Ten (1906) narrates the story of lawyer Lawrence Blakeley and the adventures that follow when on the train home from a business trip to Pittsburgh he wakes up to find his documents and clothes missing from his sleeping berth. In addition to the theft, during the night, there was a murder in the berth across and when the weapon is found under his pillow, Blakeley becomes one of the prime suspect.
