Synopsis

Amalia Cresques is the great grand-daughter of Abraham Cresques, one of a small community of Jewish mapmakers and astronomers whose services were so valuable in medieval Iberia that their odious religion had been tolerated by Muslim and Christian rulers alike. But times have changed. In 1492, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella conquered Granada, they last hold-out of Muslim rule in Spain. Flushed with a victory they felt was ordained by God, they issued an order expelling from Spain all Jews who refused to convert to Christianity. Amalia is waiting for her grandson to take her from her home forever. She can only take what she can carry, and her beloved atlas must be left behind. She remembers her life as part of a family of conversos, Jews who accept baptism and live as Christians, translating for her deaf father in the court of Henry the Navigator, living with an unscrupulous husband, a tutor to a young princess Isabella. But now, she has not yet decided if she ll go with her grandson into exile or to face the future alone, risking the wrath of the Inquisition.

LAUREL CORONA is the author of three novels: Finding Emilie, Penelope s Daughter, and the Four Seasons. She graduated from the University of California, Davis, received her MA at the Univ. of Chicago, and her Ph.D. at Davis. She has taught at San Diego State University, UC San Diego, and San Diego City College.
