Understanding how theory informs social work practice is a key requirement of the degree programme, but this is an area that students can find complex and difficult to demonstrate in essays, presentations and in discussion. Written in an accessible style, this fully-updated second edition introduces theory as intrinsic to practice and not as something aloof and separate from it. Using practical examples such as case studies, reflection points and research summaries, the author looks at key areas of theory such as values, ethics, empowerment and working as a reflective and reflexive practitioner. The sections on social work and its organisational context, understanding managerialism and putting theory into practice will be especially useful reading for students wanting to strengthen their practice skills in readiness for their placement.
Juliette Oko is a senior lecturer at the University of Teesside and is the course leader for the social work degree programme. Her research interests include social work theory and practice and reflective practice. Prior to her academic career, she worked as a qualified social worker in the field of adult services and mental health and in children and families social work.
