Synopsis

Samuel Smiles (1812-1904), était un auteur et réformateur écossais. En 1838, il a été invité à devenir le rédacteur en chef du Leeds Times. En 1845, il quitte le Leeds Times et dent secrétaire du Leeds and Thirsk Railway puis, neuf ans plus tard, du South Eastern Railway. En 1866, il quitte ce poste pour être président de la National Provident Institution. En tant que rédacteur en chef du Leeds Times, il a préconisé des causes radicales allant du suffrage des femmes au libre-échange en passant par la réforme parlementaire. Il est surtout connu aujourd'hui comme l'écrivain de livres vantant les vertus de l'auto-assistance, et des biographies louant les réalisations des ingénieurs «héroïques». Ses livres d'auto-assistance ont été cités comme influents sur le mouvement de la nouvelle pensée à la fin du XIXe siècle en Amérique et en Angleterre. Ses œuvres incluent : Self-Help: With Illustrations of Conduct and Perseverance (1859), Industrial Biography: Iron Workers and Tool Makers (1863), The Life of Thomas Telford (1867), Character (1871), Thrift (1875), Men of Invention and Industry (1874), Jasmin : Barber, Poet, Philanthroppe ist (189) 1) and A Publisher and His Friends : Memoir and Correspondence of John Murray (1891).
